Effective July 1, 2019, vital records fees decreased to $15.

The increase includes the following vital records transactions:

• Searches for birth, death, marriage, foreign-born birth, and fetal death certificates, which include a certified copy of the record if found.

• Additional certified copies of the same record that was searched as stated above.

Examples of other services that will revert back to $15:

·  adoption certificate,

·  amend a certificate,

·  amend a certificate of live birth to reflect legal change of name,

·  preparation of a delayed certificate,

·  process an administrative or legal action and,

·  preparation of copies for supporting documentation.

 Vital Statistics - Births, Deaths, and Marriages

Beginning July 1, 1997, certified copies of birth, death, and marriage certificates became available through the Recorder's Office. Each certified copy is $15.00. Those requesting certified copies must prove entitlement (immediate family) before acquiring copy. The following Vital Records are available electronically in all counties in Iowa, regardless of where the event occurred:

Births from 1988 - current date

Deaths from 1954 - current date

Marriages from 1954 - current date

When requesting a certified vital record by mail, all completed applications must be notarized and a photo copy of the applicant's valid driver's license, or other government issued picture ID is required. We also request a postal money order (or bank certified check) made payable to the Jones County Recorder and a self-addressed, stamped business size envelope. All certified copies are $15 each. Uncertified copies of vital records are available in the office only, for a fee of $1.00 per record.  Those out-of-county or out-of-state persons wishing to secure genealogical information will be referred to the local genealogical association. Office hours for Genealogical research are 8:30 to 4:00 pm.

Records from 1921 to 1941, single parent births prior to 1995, adoption records and legal name changes are kept on the state level.  The application is available online, and may be brought in to the Jones County Recorder's office for ordering or mailed to the address in Des Moines, Iowa.  To order a vital record via phone through the Department of Public Health, please follow the instructions on the back of the Vital Record Application.

The Marriage Application includes a $35 fee to apply and a 4 day waiting period before being valid. The fee also includes a certified copy of the marriage certificate once it has been recorded.
